Aztekium hintonii

Cactaceae · Mexico

A small cactus native to the gypsum cliffs near Galeana in Nuevo León, Mexico. Discovered in 1991 and described the following year by Glass and Fitz Maurice, it is the larger of the long-known Aztekium species — a blue-green body about 10 cm across with 10 to 18 deeply grooved ribs and magenta flowers at the crown. In contrast to the diminutive, exceptionally slow A. ritteri, it grows somewhat faster. It shares its cliffs with Geohintonia. The POWO accepted name is Aztekium hintonii (1992); the IUCN rates it Near Threatened; and it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
