Adansonia grandidieri

Malvaceae · Madagascar

A Malvaceae giant of the dry forests of southwestern Madagascar, between Morombe and Lake Ihotry, and the largest of the genus. Trees reach 25–30 m with a cylindrical trunk up to 3 m across, wrapped in smooth reddish-grey bark and topped by a flat crown. These are the trees lined up along the famous Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava — one of Madagascar's emblematic landscapes. White flowers open in the dry season from May to August. Seedlings thicken at the base early on, making this a caudex plant to grow over the long term. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN and on CITES Appendix II.
