Adansonia digitata

Malvaceae · Senegal, Chad & 3 others

The African baobab, the most widespread tree of the genus, ranging across the dry savannas of sub-Saharan Africa — from the Sahel through mopane and Acacia–Commiphora country, where it stands leafless for more than half the year through the dry season. Trees reach 5–25 m, with a broad trunk over 10 m across wrapped in smooth grey bark. Large white flowers hang from pendant stalks, and the fruit — "monkey bread" — yields a pulp now traded as a superfood. It is sold under the name Adansonia digitata. Long a staple to raise from seed, it is one of the easier species for a beginner. The IUCN has not finalized a formal assessment, and it is on no CITES appendix.
