"The Exotic Manual" is a guide to succulents and caudex plants — covering species basics and the practice of growing them from seed, known in Japan as mishō (実生). Mishō takes years from germination to a recognizable specimen, and the result is a plant uniquely shaped by your hands. This site aims to make that journey approachable, with per-species reference and cultivation notes for hobbyists. The catalog currently covers 51 genera and 159 species, with ongoing additions.
About the author
I'm Sato (@white.ceramica), the person behind this site.
Since first being drawn to succulents, I've welcomed many imported plants into my collection from around the world. Some of them are rare — close to vanishing from the wild. As my shelves filled up, there was a thrill in acquiring and raising something so special, and yes, a quiet pride in it too. But underneath, there was also a guilt I could never quite shake.
It was through that conflict that I came to mishō (実生) — the practice of raising plants from seed — a path that anyone deeply drawn to succulents seems to arrive at sooner or later. Growing a plant from seed takes nothing away from the wild; it honors the seeds the plant itself produced, and over the years it builds something entirely new. Day by day, you watch for the smallest changes; you learn about the plant; and quietly, your hands and your senses are refined along the way. It was a depth of fulfillment that ownership alone could never have given me.
Care for the imported plants you already have with respect, and with their magnificent forms as your guide, raise your own from seed. That practice grows you as a grower — and quietly, it reaches toward something larger: the plants remaining in the places they came from.
If this site can be even a small part of that guide —— that's what I'm making it for.

A note to fellow growers
At the end of each species page, "Featuring enthusiasts from around the world" highlights Instagram posts from people growing that plant. Every post is its creator's own work.
If you'd be glad to have your plant featured, just add #exoticmanual to your post — we look through that tag now and then and share a few here. If you'd rather not be featured, or want a post taken down, please reach out to @white.ceramica anytime.
